Israel's Achievements and Values

Israel is the most vibrant economy in the Middle East, the only democracy in the region and benefits the rest of the world with its technological innovations and compassionate humanitarian programmes - so why is she everyone's enemy??

This section of the site sets out to show what the tiny nation of Israel has achieved in the more than sixty years since her re-birth in May 1948. It also aims to reveal something of the values cherished by her people; values which, through Judaism and Christianity have been the basis of Western civilised society for millennia.

POCKET FACTS

Israel occupies a relatively small piece of territory and yet of all lands it is perhaps the most hotly disputed piece of real estate on the planet. The following facts help us to see some of the issues in perspective:

  • Israel is 1/800th the size of the Arab world.
  • Israel (8,630 sq.miles) is only marginally larger than Wales (8,022 sq.miles)
  • Israel is a tenth the size of mainland Britain (93,000 sq.miles).
  • Jews are indigenous to the region and have maintained a continuous presence there for over 3,000 years according to archaeological and historical evidence and Biblical text.
  • ‘Zion’ is an age-old name for Jerusalem and the Land of Israel. Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people who sought to restore their freedom and independence in their ancestral homeland. Jews were the majority in Jerusalem in the 19th century.
